The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science for the benefit of all people.  

AAAS Awards

Philip Hauge Abelson Award
The 2015 AAAS Philip Hauge Abelson Prize was established in 1985 by the AAAS Board of Directors to be awarded to someone who has ‘made signal contributions to the advancement of science in the United States’ either as a public servant, in recognition of sustained exceptional contributions to advancing science, or a scientist, whose career has been distinguished both for scientific achievement and for other notable services to the scientific community.

Award for Science Diplomacy 
Formerly “AAAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation”
Many scientists and engineers contribute valuable time away from the established career paths of research, teaching, and publishing to foster activities and develop programs that both address key science questions and build important societal links. AAAS seeks to recognize an individual or a limited number of individuals working together in the scientific or engineering community for making an outstanding contribution to furthering science diplomacy.

Award for Public Engagement with Science
Formerly “AAAS Award for Public Understanding of Science and Technology”
The AAAS Award for Public Engagement with Science, established in 1987, recognizes scientists and engineers who make outstanding contributions to the ‘popularization of science.’

Mentor Awards
The two categories of the AAAS Mentor Awards (Lifetime Mentor Award and Mentor Award) both honor individuals who during their careers demonstrate extraordinary leadership to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in science and engineering fields and careers. These groups include: women of all racial or ethnic groups; African American, Native American, and Hispanic men; and people with disabilities.

Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility
The AAAS Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility is presented annually by the American Association for the Advancement of Science to honor scientists and engineers whose exemplary actions have served to foster scientific freedom and responsibility. We hope that the presentation of this award will inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers as they begin their careers.

Kavli Science Journalism Awards
The AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards represent the pinnacle of achievement for professional journalists in the science writing field. The awards recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals (rather than institutions, publishers or employers) for their coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics. Starting in 2015, the awards are open to journalists worldwide.

Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science
The AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science, established in 2010, recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities.

Martin and Rose Wachtel Cancer Research Award
This award, funded by an endowment established through a generous bequest from Martin L. Wachtel, honors early-career investigators who have performed outstanding work in the field of cancer research.

Newcomb Cleveland Prize
The Association’s oldest award, the AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize, supported by The Fodor Family Trust, was established in 1923 with funds donated by Newcomb Cleveland of New York City and was originally called the AAAS Thousand Dollar Prize. It is now known as the AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize, and its value is $25,000. The prize is awarded to the author or authors of an outstanding paper published in the Research Articles or Reports sections of Science. Each annual contest starts with the first issue of June and ends with the last issue of the following May.

Eppendorf and Science Prize for Neurobiology
The Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology acknowledges the increasingly active and important role of neurobiology in advancing our understanding of the functioning of the brain and the nervous system — a quest that seems destined for dramatic expansion in the coming decades. This international prize, established in 2002, encourages the work of promising young neurobiologists by providing support in the early stages of their careers. It is awarded annually for the most outstanding neurobiological research by a young scientist, as described in a 1,000-word essay based on research performed during the past three years.

Award for Affordable Green Chemistry
To recognize outstanding scientific discoveries that lay the foundation for environmentally-friendly products or manufacturing processes at a cost comparable to or less than that of current technologies, or discoveries that deliver new applications with compelling cost/benefit profiles. To identify and recognize discovery of new eco-friendly chemistries with the potential to enable products or manufacturing processes that are less expensive than existing alternatives.

Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology
To encourage creativity in research and technology or methods of analysis to provide a scientific basis for informed environmental control decision-making processes, or to provide practical technologies that will reduce health risk factors.

C. Ellen Gonter Environmental Chemistry Award
This award is presented to graduate students at U.S. and international universities who submit the highest quality research papers. Award winners present their papers at the Fall ACS Meeting

Recognize sustained and distinguished contributions to the field of environmental chemistry and to ENVR.

ENVR Certificate of Merit Award
To recognize ENVR division members for giving a presentation at the ACS national meeting for the first time.

Graduate Student Award
This award recognizes graduate students who are working in areas related to environmental chemistry. The award is based on student transcripts and record of research productivity, and a letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor.

Award of Excellence

Carl R. Sullivan Fishery Conservation Award
Presented to an individual or organization for outstanding contributions to the conservation of fishery resources. Eligibility is not restricted to AFS members, and accomplishments can include political, legal, educational, scientific, and managerial successes.  Nominations should include a synopsis of fishery conservation contributions; a description of the influence of those contributions on improved understanding, management, or use of fishery resources; and at least one additional supporting letter. Please include in the nomination letter, the nominee’s title and full contact information (i.e. address, e-mail, phone, etc.) to complete the package.  Nominations should be submitted electronically by pdf attachment to an email.

Distinguished Service Award
Recognizes outstanding contributions of time and energy for special projects or activities by AFS members. The number of recipients may vary.  A single member, a group of members, and AFS staff are eligible candidates.  Please include in the nomination letter, the nominee’s title and full contact information (i.e. address, e-mail, phone, etc.) to complete the package.  Nominations should include description of the outstanding contributions by the candidate(s) and submitted electronically by pdf attachment to an email.

Emerging Leaders Mentorship Award
The AFS Emerging Leaders Mentorship Award Program was established to develop future leaders of the Society, and the fisheries profession as a whole, by providing selected candidates an opportunity to participate for one year in activities of the AFS Governing Board. Candidates must be full AFS members in good standing who submit complete application packages. Awardees will be paired with a mentor who is a member of the Governing Board and will be awarded up to $500 to offset costs associated with attending the governance meetings,  held in conjunction with the annual AFS Meeting.

Meritorious Service Award
Presented annually to an individual AFS member for loyalty, dedication, and meritorious service to the Society over a long period of time and for exceptional commitment to the programs, objectives, and long-term goals of the Society. Nominations should include the candidate’s name, full contact information, biographical information and/or history of the nominee’s service (not to exceed 3 pages) to the Society.  Letters supporting the nomination are welcome.  Nominations and any supporting letters must be submitted electronically via email in PDF format.

Outstanding Chapter Award and Outstanding Student Subunit Award
Recognizes outstanding professionalism, active resource protection, and enhancement programs, as well as a strong commitment to the mission of the Society.  One award is given in each category ( small chapters, large chapters and student subunit.  Applications can be obtained from the AFS website Click on Applications for menu options to find more information.  Nominations should be submitted electronically by pdf attachment to an email and include full contact information of the Chapter President (i.e. address, email, phone, etc.) to complete the package.

President’s Fishery Conservation Award
Presented in two categories: (1) an AFS individual or unit, or (2) a non-AFS individual or entity, for singular accomplishments or long-term contributions that advance aquatic resource conservation at a regional or local level.  The award is administered by the Past President’s Advisory Council.  A nomination package should include a strong and detailed letter describing the nominee’s contribution and the evidence for accomplishment at a regional or local level.  If the nomination is for an individual, include a CV if possible.  Nominations may be supported by multiple individuals by signing one nomination letter, or by submitting supporting letters in addition to the main nomination letter. William E. Ricker Conservation Award
Presented to any entity (individual, group, agency, or company) for accomplishment or activity that advances aquatic resource conservation that is significant at a national or international level.  The award is administered by the Past President’s Advisory Council.  A nomination package should include a strong and detailed letter describing the nominee’s accomplishments and the evidence for being “significant at a national or international level”.  If the nomination is for an individual, include a CV if possible.  Nominations may be supported by multiple individuals by signing one letter, or by submitting supporting letters in addition to the main nomination letter.  Include the nominee’s title and full contact information (address, email, and phone).  Nominations should be submitted electronically by pdf attachment to an e-mail.

The Emmeline Moore Prize
The American Fisheries Society (AFS) has established a career achievement award, named after the first female AFS president, Emmeline Moore (1927-1928), to recognize efforts of an individual member in the promotion of demographic diversity in the society.  This award will be presented to an individual who demonstrates strong commitment and exemplary service to ensuring equal opportunity access to higher education in fisheries and/or professional development in the broad range of fisheries science disciplines.  Qualified nominees must exhibit clear evidence of service and commitment to diversity initiatives, including a strong research or fisheries management leadership background, public understanding of diversity issues, technical and popular writing, and inspirational leadership.  Candidates should also have enunciated principles that lead to greater involvement of under-represented groups in fisheries science, education, research or management. Nominees for the award are restricted to AFS members.  A nomination package should include a detailed letter of support (maximum three pages) describing the nominee’s accomplishments and including evidence of involvement in diversity initiatives given the criteria noted above.  The main letter of nomination can be supported through several signatures or up to three additional letters of support can be submitted.  Please include in the nomination letter, the nominee’s title and full contact information (i.e. address, e-mail, phone etc.) to complete the package. Excellence in Public Outreach
Presented to an AFS member who goes the “extra mile” in sharing the value of fisheries science/research with the general public through the popular media and other communication channels.  Two or more individuals may act as nominators, but at least one nominator must be an AFS member.  Entries must include a biographical sketch of the nominee (not to exceed 3 pages) and supporting evidence of communicating the value of fisheries issues/research to the general public through the media and other communication channels, plus any evidence of teaching others about communication with the public.  Please include in the nomination letter, the nominee’s title and full contact information (i.e. address, e-mail, phone, etc.) to complete the package.  Nominations should be submitted electronically by pdf attachment to an email.

Honorary Membership
Presented to individuals who have achieved outstanding professional accomplishments or have given outstanding service to the Society.  Honorary Members must be nominated by at least 100 active members and elected by a 2/3 majority of active members voting.   Please include in the nomination letter, the nominee’s title and full contact information.

Retired Members Travel Award for the AFS Annual Meeting
The American Fisheries Society has established this travel award to encourage and enable members of the Society to attend annual meetings, particularly those members who might play a more active role in the meeting.  The Society recognizes that some retired members who desire to participate in the annual meeting might be inhibited for financial reasons.  Retired members may not have funds for travel to meetings that were available to them while employed.  Therefore, this award is meant for those members who truly have a need for financial assistance.  The Society has neither means nor desire to verify financial need, so that your request for support is based on an honor system.  However, you must be a dues-paying retired member of the American Fisheries Society to apply.  A maximum of $1,500 may be awarded for reimbursable expenses.  Click on Applicationsfor theform on the AFS website.Nominations should be submitted electronically by pdf attachment to an e-mail.

Student Writing Contest
Recognizes students for excellence in the communication of fisheries research to the general public.  Undergraduate and graduate students are asked to submit a 500- to 700word article explaining their own research or a research project in their lab or school. The article must be written in language understandable to the general public (i.e., journalistic style).  The winning article will be published in Fisheries.    Students may write about research that has been completed, is in progress, or is in the planning stages. The papers will be judged according to their quality and their ability to turn a scientific research topic into a paper for the general public and will be scored based upon a grading rubric. (check the AFS web site on the main awards page for the grading rubric)

Excellence in Fisheries Education Award
[Education Section]
The American Fisheries Society (AFS) Excellence in Fisheries Education Award was established in 1988.  The award is administered by the Education Section and is presented to an individual to recognize excellence in organized teaching and advising in some aspect of fisheries education.  Nominees may be involved in extension or continuing education, as well as traditional college and university instruction.  Nominees must be AFS members, have been actively engaged in fisheries education within the last five years, and have had at least 10 years of professional employment experience in fisheries education.  Two or more people may act as nominators, but at least one nominator must be an AFS member.  The nominator(s) is responsible for compiling supporting material and submitting the application.  The suggested format for applications can be found on the Education Section web site.  Please include in the nomination letter, the nominee’s title and full contact information (i.e. address, e-mail, phone, etc.) to complete the package.

John E. Skinner Memorial Fund Award
[Education Section]
The John E. Skinner Memorial Fund was established in memory of John Skinner, former California-Nevada Chapter and Western Division AFS President.  The fund provides monetary travel awards for deserving graduate students or exceptional undergraduate students to attend the AFS annual meeting.  The 2015 meeting will be held in Portland, Oregon, August 15-20.

Special Travel Award
[Introduced Fish Section]
The Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center, in partnership with the Introduced Fish Section (IFS), awards travel funds ($500) to support student travel to the American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting in Portland Oregon in August 2015. This special award will be given to a student whose work advances our understanding of the basic biology or ecology of invasive fish within the Upper Mississippi River Basin in order to control them. Student receiving funds must be a member of the Introduced Fish Section, give an oral or poster presentation at the national AFS meeting in Portland, and attend the IFS Business Meeting. Winners of the award will be selected and notified prior to the meeting. The Selection Committee will review the application. Please be concise with your answers.

Travel Award

The Introduced Fish Section (IFS) awards travel funds to support student travel to the American Fisheries Society Annual Meetings. Student receiving funds must be a member of the Introduced Fish Section, give an oral or poster presentation including introduced aquatic species, and attend the IFS Business Meeting. The application will be reviewed by the Selection Committee.

J. Frances Allen Scholarship Award
[Equal Opportunites Section]
The American Fisheries Society (AFS) is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted until April 1, 2015, for the J Frances Allen Scholarship for a female doctoral fisheries student.  The J Frances Allen Scholarship was established in 1986 to honor Allen, who pioneered women’s involvement in the AFS and in the field of fisheries.  The scholarship fund was established with the intent of encouraging women to become fisheries professionals. One J Frances Allen Scholarship will be awarded. A runner-up will also be acknowledged.

The Steven Berkeley Marine Conservation Fellowship
This fellowship was created by AFS in 2007 to honor the memory of Steven Berkeley, a dedicated fisheries scientist. Berkeley was a long-time member of AFS and a member of the first Board of Directors of the Fisheries Conservation Foundation. The fellowship comprises a competitively based $10,000 award to a graduate student actively engaged in thesis research relevant to marine conservation; a focus on fisheries issues is not required.  Please use the current application requirements at the link below, as revisions have been made recently.

The Clarence Leroy Meisinger Award is given to an individual in recognition of research achievement that is, at least in part, aerological in character and concerns the observation, theory, and modeling of atmospheric motions on all scales.

The Cleveland Abbe Award for Distinguished Service to Atmospheric Sciences by an Individual is presented on the basis of activities that have materially contributed to the progress of the atmospheric or related sciences or to the application of the atmospheric or related sciences to general, social, economic, or humanitarian welfare.

APS Awards

David Adler Lectureship Award in the Field of Material Physics
To recognize an outstanding contributor to the field of materials physics, who is noted for the quality of his/her research, review articles and lecturing. The Lectureship consists of a $5000 honorarium for the lecturer and a certificate citing the contribution made by the recipient. The award will be made at the March APS meeting where the lecturer will present an invited talk before the appropriate focused session of the Materials Physics Division. It is presented annually.

Distinguished Lectureship Award on the Applications of Physics
APS’s Committee on Careers and Professional Development (CCPD) and the Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics (FIAP) seek to recognize and honor physicists in industrial and other non-academic careers for their significant contributions to the advancement of physics of a technical, industrial, or entrepreneurial nature and for their demonstrated ability to give interesting and engaging lectures to both experts and non-experts.

Dwight Nicholson Medal for Outreach
This is awarded to recognize the humanitarian aspect of physics and physicists created through public lectures and public media, teaching, research, or science related activities. Recognition consists of the Nicholson medal and a certificate which includes the citation for which the recipient has been recognized. Up to $1,500 will be available for the recipient’s travel expenses to the meeting at which the Medal is presented. It will be presented annually.

Edward A. Bouchet Award
To promote the participation of under-represented minorities in physics by identifying and recognizing a distinguished minority physicist who has made significant contributions to physics research. The program will help publicize the lecturer’s work and career development to the physics community, especially among minority physics students. The Lectureship consists of a stipend of $3,500 plus support for travel to an APS meeting where the recipient will receive the award and give a presentation. In addition, the lecturer will be invited to three academic institutions where the impact of the visit on minority students would be significant. The purpose of these visits would be to deliver technical lectures or lectures about his/her specialty, to visit classrooms when appropriate, to assist the college/university in pre-college outreach efforts where appropriate, and to talk informally with both faculty and students about research and teaching careers in physics. Financial support will also be provided for travel to these lectures. It will be presented annually.

Excellence in Physics Education Award
To recognize and honor a team or group of individuals (such as a collaboration) or, exceptionally, a single individual, who have exhibited a sustained commitment to excellence in physics education. The award, presented annually, consists of a $5,000 monetary award, a certificate citing the achievements of the group or individual, and an allowance for travel expenses to the APS April Meeting where the award is presented.

Francis M. Pipkin Award
To honor exceptional research accomplishments by a young scientist in the interdisciplinary area of precision measurement and fundamental constants and to encourage the wide dissemination of the results of that research. The award is given biennially every odd-number year and consists of $2,000 plus support of travel expenses to the APS Meeting at which the award is conferred.

GSOFT Early Career Award for Soft Matter Research
The “GSOFT Early Career Award for Soft Matter Research” is a topical group award that aims to recognize outstanding and sustained contributions by a young researcher to the field of Soft Matter during his or her initial period of full time employment. The award provides $5000 and the cost of travel to the APS March meeting. The award is generously sponsored by Solvay.

Henry Primakoff Award for Early-Career Particle Physics
To recognize outstanding contributions made by physicists who are just beginning their careers, and to help promote the careers of exceptionally promising young physicists. The prize is given annually and will consist of $1,500 and a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, plus an allowance for travel to an APS meeting to receive the award and deliver an invited lecture.

John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research
To recognize a particular recent outstanding achievement in plasma physics research. The award consists of $5,000 to be divided equally in the case of multiple recipients, and includes a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient or recipients, to be presented at an award ceremony at the Division of Plasma Physics Annual Meeting Banquet. It will be awarded annually.

John H. Dillon Medal
To recognize outstanding research accomplishments by young polymer physicists who have demonstrated exceptional research promise early in their careers. Recognition consists of $2,000, up to $1,000 allowance for travel to the meeting of the Society at which the award is being presented, a bronze medallion, and a certificate citing the accomplishments of the recipient. It will be presented annually.

John Wheatley Award
To honor and recognize the dedication of physicists who have made contributions to the development of physics in countries of the third world. The award will consist of a stipend of $2,000 and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient. Jonathan F. Reichert and Barbara Wolff-Reichert Award for Excellence in Advanced Laboratory Instruction
This award is to recognize and honor outstanding achievement in teaching, sustaining (for at least four years), and enhancing an advanced undergraduate laboratory course or courses at US institutions. The course(s) should provide a selection of experiments in a range of the various interest areas of physics, for example atomic physics, electronics and optics.

To recognize outstanding contributions to the public understanding or resolution of issues involving the interface of physics and society. Joseph F. Keithley Award For Advances in Measurement Science
To recognize physicists who have been instrumental in the development of measurement techniques or equipment that have impact on the physics community by providing better measurements. Landau-Spitzer Award
The Award will be given to an individual or group of researchers for outstanding theoretical, experimental or technical contribution(s) in plasma physics, and for advancing the collaboration and unity between the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA) by joint research, or research that advances knowledge which benefits the EU and USA communities in a unique way. The award may be given to a team or collaboration of up to four persons affiliated with either the EU or USA institutions. The Award consists of a $4000 honorarium, a certificate citing the contribution, and a registration fee waiver to attend the meeting at which the award is to be presented. The person or team receiving the award will be offered an invited talk at the forthcoming annual conference of APS-DPP (usually early November) or EPS-DPP (usually end of June, or first week of July), depending on the affiliation of the recipient(s).

Leo Szilard Lectureship Award
To recognize outstanding accomplishments by physicists in promoting the use of physics for the benefit of society in such areas as the environment, arms control, and science policy. The lecture format is intended to increase the visibility of those who have promoted the use of physics for the benefit of society. The award consists of $3,000, a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, plus $2,000 travel expenses for lectures given by the recipient at an APS meeting and at two or more educational institutions or research laboratories in the year following the award. The lectures should be especially aimed at physicists early in their careers.

LeRoy Apker Award
The LeRoy Apker Award recognizes outstanding achievements in physics by undergraduate students, and provides encouragement to young physicists who have demonstrated great potential for future scientific accomplishment. Two awards are presented each year, one to a student from a Ph.D. granting institution, and one to a student from a non-Ph.D. granting institution. The award consists of $5,000 for the recipient, $5,000 for their undergraduate institution’s physics department to support undergraduate research, a certificate, and reimbursement for travel to an APS meeting to give an invited talk.

Maria Goeppert Mayer Award
To recognize and enhance outstanding achievement by a woman physicist in the early years of her career, and to provide opportunities for her to present these achievements to others through public lectures in the spirit of Maria Goeppert Mayer. The award consists of $2,500 plus a $4,000 travel allowance to provide opportunities for the recipient to give lectures in her field of physics at four institutions and at the meeting of the Society at which the award is bestowed and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient. The award will be presented annually.

Rolf Landauer and Charles H. Bennett Award in Quantum Computing
This award recognizes recent outstanding contributions in quantum information science, especially using quantum effects to perform computational and information-management tasks that would be impossible or infeasible by purely classical means. The award is given annually and will consist of $5,000 and a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, plus an allowance for travel to an APS meeting to receive the award and deliver an invited lecture.

Stuart Jay Freedman Award in Experimental Nuclear Physics
This award is presented annually to an outstanding early career experimentalist in nuclear physics. Robert H. Whittaker Awards
There are two Whittaker Awards given annually:

The Whittaker Distinguished Ecologist award recognizes an ecologist with an earned doctorate, and an outstanding record of contributions in ecology, who is not a U.S. citizen and is not currently residing in the U.S.  This award provides funds for travel to the U.S. for research or to attend a meeting and covers expenses up to $2000. 

The Whittaker Award recognizes an outstanding ecologist in a developing country who is not a U.S. citizen and is not currently residing in the U.S. The award is open to ecologists at any career stage and would cover expenses up to $1200 for travel to the US for research or to attend a meeting.

Murray F. Buell Award and E. Lucy Braun Award

Murray F. Buell had a long and distinguished record of service and accomplishment in the Ecological Society of America. Among other things, he ascribed great importance to the participation of students in meetings and to excellence in the presentation of papers. To honor his selfless dedication to the younger generation of ecologists, the Murray F. Buell Award for Excellence in Ecology is given to a student for the outstanding oral paper presented at the ESA Annual Meeting.

Lucy Braun, an eminent plant ecologist and one of the charter members of the Society, studied and mapped the deciduous forest regions of eastern North America and described them in her classic book, The Deciduous Forests of Eastern North America. To honor her, the E. Lucy Braun Award for Excellence in Ecology is given to a student for the outstanding poster presentation at the ESA Annual Meeting.

Ocean News and Technology Young Professional Award
Presented to an individual 35 years old or younger who is an MTS member in good standing who has shown leadership in MTS and who works in a professional capacity in management, engineering or research and development in a marine technology field.

National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professions Inc. (NOGLSTP) empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by providing education, advocacy, professional development, networking, and peer support.

Walt Westman Award
Named after one of NOGLSTP’s founders, this award is the highest national award given to a NOGLSTP Member who has shown dedication and commitment to the advancement of NOGLSTP’s mission. This prestigious award recognizes the unselfish and outstanding contributions of the honoree, whose activities — carried on continuously over a period of years — have brought honor and esteem to the Organization by their very character. He or she symbolizes, as did Walt Westman, the ideal role model to LGBTQ+ engineers, scientists, and educators today by preaching aloud that “it can be done”.

LGBTQ+ Scientist of the Year Award
This award is reserved for the LGBTQ+ Scientist who has made outstanding contributions to their field, and recognizes the awardee for sustained contributions in design, management, or research. The nomination form should include the technical or societal significance of these contributions or achievements. The nominee need not be well known to the science public at large, and need not be a NOGLSTP member.

LGBTQ+ Engineer of the Year Award
This award is reserved for the LGBTQ+ Engineer who has made outstanding contributions to their field, and recognizes the awardee for sustained contributions in design, production, management, or research. The nomination form should include the technical or societal significance of these contributions or achievements. The nomineee need not be well known to the science/engineering public at large, and need not be a NOGLSTP member.

LGBTQ+ Educator of the Year Award
This award is reserved for the LGBTQ+ Educator who has enabled significant growth for LGBTQ+ students in science or technology – through teaching, counseling, advocacy, role modeling, or other educational roles. The nomination form should include the significance of these contributions or achievements. The nominee need not be well known to the science public at large, need not be a NOGLSTP member, and may be a secondary or post-secondary educator.

National Institution/Organization Award
These awards are given to the institution/organization which has demonstrated outstanding support for NOGLSTP, its programs and objectives.

These awards are given to the corporation or company which has demonstrated outstanding support for NOGLSTP, its programs and objectives.

The National Weather Association (NWA) is a member-led professional association supporting and promoting excellence in operational meteorology and related activities since 1975.

Operational Achievement Individual Award
Presented to any Individual who has made a significant contribution to operational meteorology (e.g. an accurate and timely forecast for one or more significant weather events or for long-period achievement).

Presented to an individual or organization directly assisting the meteorological community in providing weather-related information to the public. Individuals and organizations in the meteorological profession  are ineligible for this award.

Public Education Award:
Presented to an individual or organization providing significant contributions to increase the public’s weather awareness.

Broadcaster of the Year Award: 
Presented to a NWA member Radio or Television weathercaster, or other member of the broadcast media, whose activities have significantly contributed to the development and presentation of weather information to the public service. Radio and Television weathercaster candidates must be current NWA Seal of Approval holders and have had the NWA Seal of Approval for at least one year prior to being nominated for this award.

Aviation Meteorology Award: 
Presented to an individual or group to recognize significant contributions to aviation meteorology, such as impact of operational forecasts on aviation operations or advances in aviation meteorology including research in detection and forecasting of aviation hazards.

Presented to a Local Chapter of the NWA whose activities have significantly increase awareness of the weather and of the NWA in their local area.

The Larry R. Johnson Special Award:

Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is an inclusive organization dedicated to fostering the success of Chicano/Hispanic and Native American scientists, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM.

SACNAS Distinguished Scientist Award
Nominee holds a PhD or other doctoral degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) research field, has a minimum of ten years of experience as a principal investigator, and is 45 years of age or older. The nominee must be engaged in research and educational activities at the national level including, but not limited to active funded research projects or funded STEM-based education initiatives.
