NOAA Citizen Science Focus Area

What is Citizen Science?

Citizen science is a type of volunteering in which individuals or organizations participate in one or more aspects of the scientific process. Volunteer observations have helped inform weather predictions and ocean and coastal management efforts for over a century and continue to do so today. NOAA citizen science projects routinely engage over 500,000 participants total who contribute millions of volunteer hours each year. New and emerging technologies, a growing field of practice and a better connected public are rapidly enhancing citizen science as a powerful tool for research and monitoring.
